Too true IL :)

I also scooped the SAC QSA to Blake and the, hopefully, related SAP long service medal to the same name. Research on its way to me as I write :P

I was astounded that the Waugh Natal Police group only fetched lower estimate. Had I have suspected that would be the case.......

Hello Henk,
These medals are rare and I think the same can be said of other Natal corps to an extent, but, I still think with all things Natal, you really do have to be in the right place at the right moment in time, I have never found them easy, in fact I'd have said life was actually easier before the internet, which really should not be the case, things were certainly more affordable!

Slightly off-topic, nut I have the QSA to Tpr A Bowman named to Murray's Scouts. It took me almost 30 years of QSA "Unit Collecting" before I bought that locally in 2001 against stiff competition at a then very hefty price of almost R4400 !!

Many thanks for the information about your Murray's Scout QSA. I am pleased that yours was also a hard-to-find medal, which tends to confirm my impression that medals named to Murray's Scouts are rare. I feel privileged that my collection will have something special in it that is shared by you!

Brett,

I share your liking of Murray's Horse. I used to have the QSA (1) Natal to Troop Leader Herbert.

DNW have sold 3 QSAs to Murray's Horse, all QSA (1) Natal:

Tpr C Westbrooke. April 2004 £150
Tpr B Westall. Mar 2008 £230
Tpr Ldr C H Herbert. Mar 2011 £370

That's an average of one every 4 years or so!

Here is a Pareto analysis of the single QSAs in the City Coins 65 auction, ie the 33 lots between 95 and 127.

The analysis shows that 19 (58%) of the lots sold for more than their top estimate and 14 (42%) below their top estimate.

The difference between the top estimate and the actual price ranged from +109% to -33%. The average was +13%.

I have added a column to convert the hammer prices into Sterling based on the exchange rate on 15 Aug. It is not often you see QSAs sell for less than £100 these days. 15 (45%) of the 33 QSAs had a hammer price of less than £100.

David

Thank you for the very interesting analysis of the prices realised for the single QSA's on the City Coins sale. I tried to make sense of the prices without any such analysis, and it seemed to me that, as always, there were anomalies and mysteries. I wonder to what extent the weak Rand against all the world's main currencies affects the prices? 100 GBP may seem a little in the UK, but it is a lot of SA Rand(about R1800 - it was once R200!)

It also seemed to me that the value of ABO's has appreciated considerably in Rand terms over the past few years. I wonder if there is more overseas interest in these medals?

Thank you also for the information on the recent sales of Murray's Horse QSA's. I think that such medals may appear slightly more frequently in SA. They are certainly a lot more common than Murray's Scouts medals. Adrian has very kindly copied the medal rolls for these two units for me, and I hope to do some analysis of them starting next week.

If anyone else has, or knows of medals from the Hon T K (later Sir Thomas Keir) Murray's private army, I would be very grateful to hear about them.

Regards
Brett
