The roll confirms the two clasps and says returned to England. He is not listed as a casualty.

Certainly on the face of it, a pleasing medal, the recipient may have been unfit or he may have simply been time expired.

A particularly nice pair of medals, Herbert Giddings served in South Africa from the 12th of October 1899, after joining the Army in 1896.

QSA (4) Eland RoL LN Belf (6190 Pte. D. Armstrong, Gordon Highrs:);
[ KSA (2) ]

Wounded at Elandslaagte on 21 October 1899. Scarce with Relief of Ladysmith clasp and mostly received by those who were wounded at Elandslaagte and therefore missed the Defence of Ladysmith. Also entitled to King's South Africa medal.

I think there are around 169 Elandslaagte and RoL combinations.
