QSA (2) Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith (527 Serjt: H. C. Benson. Imp: Lt. Horse)

Hawtry Cecil Benson had prior service in the 16th Lancers for 3.5 years. He transferred to the 5th Lancers and served for 2 years before being discharged by purchase.

Enlisted in the 1st ILH 3 October 1899. Aged 24 years and 10 months. 6'. Fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

He was wounded at Elandslaagte and died of wounds at Intombi, 7 December 1899.

Good spot on Donaldson David. The medal roll shows he was awarded the QSA with the clasps as currently offered so in the intervening years it's been reconstituted correctly. When offered at Christie's the post Elandslaagte clasps looked highly questionable to say the least and included incompatible state and battle clasps too.

Based on his period of service he should also have qualified for a KSA but I've been unable to locate a KSA roll entry for him

David,

There are several pages of KSAs to the NMR and he would have been on WO100/363p188 if he had received the KSA. I cannot understand why some members of the NMR received the KSA. Possibly his date of discharge in the nominal roll is incorrect?



I haven't cross referenced the other dates of discharge against the KSA roll.
