Frank - The apparently disproportionate number of Dublins (and indeed KRRC) taken POW at Talana was because they provided mounted infantry detachments which were attached to the 18th Hussars. Many of these men were taken POW along with a squadron of the 18th Hussars when Colonel Moller surrendered.

Regards

David

Hello David,
Quite frankly, a good man should know his limitations, Bernhard Moller would have perhaps done rather better if only he had stayed in the mess at Bury St Edmunds, putting the world to rights, with the likes of Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny and Edward Greene, over dinner, very clearly, the Yeomanry Cavalry was where he belonged and it would have been better for all if he had not even thought about the Army.

Certainly from memory, he surrendered at about 16.00 hours on Friday the 20th of October, some eight miles north of Dundee at Adelaide Farm.

Interestingly, many of the Dublin's Mounted Infantry had only qualified as such the year before in Pietermaritzburg, their regiment was part of the British garrison in the Colony at that point, but, these were not the particular men that I'm talking about here, as David says, there were other circumstances that remain unclear.
Regards Frank

At just a glance, a very pleasing group, I always think it is nice to see medals like those to any rank and file, they have survived together as a group throughout the last century and well into this one.
