"Ernest William Coxwell was born at Blackheath, London in 1875 and enrolled in the Cape Police D.2, on 21st June 1897. He transferred to the Cape Police D.3 (Eastern Cape)(Town Police) in 1900 and was promoted Sub Inspector (Cape Police D.3)(Beaufort West) in October 1902, Chief Constable of Beaufort West in November 1902. On reorganization, after Union, he joined the South African Police as a Sub Inspector on 1st April 1913 and was promoted Inspector on 2nd July 1920 (District Commandant Pietersberg, Transavaal)
Coxwell saw service in the Laingberg Campaign of 1897 and served in the Boer War (being present at the Defence of Mafeking). In the Great War he was appointed Adjutant (25/10/1914) of the Prisoners of War (Officers) Camp at Pietermaritzburg (Methuen Barracks) and Durban (1914-1915) and District Commandant of No 15 District Humansorp (Headguarters)(1916-1919). Coxwell retired from the South African Police on 31st March, 1927 and died in 1934.
His POW service was not uninteresting. An exact from the Nonguai 1915 "A little excitement was caused on the night of the 30th December 1914, when it was discovered that some of the prisoners had succeeded in escaping by making a tunnel under the fence and road into the long grass and undergrowth to the west of the camp. (At Pietermaritzburg). Although two sentries were posted there, neither of them heard anything unusual until about 8 pm, when one of them, having had his suspicions aroused, walked into the grass and found three men crawling away. He promptly held them up. The alarm being raised, a search was immediately made and a check roll call ordered. Then prisoners were found to be absent. Seven of these have since been rearrested in Natal, but the others are still at large."
Another extract from the Nonguai 1915: "On the night of the 7th January 1915, a sentry fired a shot at one of the prisoners of war for, (so it is alleged) waving a small German flag in his face and using vile and opprobrious epithets towards him. This incident caused great excitement and a general commotion in the camp. The sentry responsible was placed under arrest."
