Henk

Is the naming correct? I asked for a photo and it seems interesting on the long service medal, to say the least!

Doug.

Doug,

The Natal LS&GC makes for a superb group.

Joined: 18 Mar 1890 and served 18 years 259 days. Total service 18 years 259 days. Date awarded the Natal LS&GC Medal: 26 Nov 1909.

QSA (1) Natal (Gaoler J.A.P Le Poer Natal Police), Natal 1906 (1) 1906 (Gaoler J.A.P. Le Poer Natal Police), Natal LS & GC Ed VII (1:C: Sgt J.A. Le Poer-Power N.P.).

Originally from Ireland. The Natal civil list for 1902 shows him as an officer for the sale of ammunition, in Richmond, Natal (with his date of appointment indicated (erroneously) as 1898). As a gaoler Le Poer Power served in Richmond, Newcastle, Pietermaritzburg and Stander. After a Natal Police regimental parade of 302 officers and men on the Market Square, Pietermaritzburg in November 1909; 28 members of the Natal Police (including Le Poer Power) were presented with their Natal long service medals by His Excellency the Governor of Natal, Sir Mathew Nathan. The Public service list of 1920 shows Le Poer Power as an Assistant superintendent of the Johannesburg goal and Outstations, and as Warden of the Diepkloof Reformatory. His date of appointment is shown as 1890. Le Poer Power also served as Assistant superintendent of Durban prison and the Point convict prison, and in a similar capacity at the Central prison in Pretoria. Le Poer Power was a keen boatsman and cricketer. He died in Pietermaritzburg in 1946.

Don't know yet, it normally takes a couple of days to find out. Fingers crossed though.

I've just had feedback on the two items I bid on - didn't get either and they went for considerable more than estimate.

Not shedding tears though as they were, at best, a whim.

Is it just my imagination or are QSA's fetching some commanding prices!!?

Regards

Rory
