Stirton began his service in the British Army in the Aberdeen Volunteers 1876-77. The Royal Horse Artillery 1878-1883. The Royal Horse Artillery served in the Afghan wars, sadly his Afghan medal with Kandahar bar was lost so he had a replacement made and a special bar Maiwand made for himself. In that Maiwand battle Stirton was in E/B Battery supporting Indian Infantry and Calvary. On the morning of 27th July 1880 the British found themselves in ill chosen ground as their position was dominated by hills and deep ravines along the entire front. Facing 7500 Afgan forces the 2600 Indian and British forces were subjected to concentrated and accurate bombardment and the Indian troops refusing to charge soon became overrun and had to withdraw. Stirtons E/B Battery limbered up with the enemy only yards away. Some of the men returning to the fray to rescue wounded comrades. The bravery of E/B Battery at Maiwand was recognized by the awarding of two VC’s and eight DCM’s. Stirton was one of a handful survivors. With the hunger for more action he joined the 9th Batt Imperial Yeomanry knowing they were coming to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. He joined and served in the Cape Field Artillery and Imperial Light Horse with which as a member of the Coronation contingent to London was awarded the 1911 King George V Coronation medal. With WW I caused him to re-enlist he was nearly 50 years of age and served in the miscellaneous Trades Coy through which he was awarded the Meritorious Service medal. Only 46 were awarded. In recognition of valuable services rendered with the armies of France and Flanders. After the War Stirton continued to serve in the Active Citizen force as a Commissioned Officers. Most of the medals are well polished. There are 44 pages of photocopied research.
