He served for exactly 12 years to the day and was discharged on 16th February 1904 in Pretoria, South Africa aged 29. Upon discharge he clearly returned to Wales almost immediately and purchased a pub called "The Oddfellows Inn" at Newport from the previous landlord Mr Edwin G. Dutfield. The purchase price of the pub (24th August 1904) including the goodwill of the business and the contents inventory was £350 ! with a further sum of £18/18s/9d for the wet & dry goods !

From the next Kaplan sale:

D522B, Queens South Africa Medal Bar Defence of Kimberly Pte G.B. Green Kimberly Town Guard VF+, 4000

D523 Kimberly Star engraved Robt G Creer. G. Coy. Sec. 2 VF, 5000

There is a Pte G B Creen, G Co KTG, on the roll. Presumably this is the pair to that man? If so, it would be a great shame to separate them in this way. I have queried with Michael.

That is what I call a fairly rare clasp combination-no wonder it made good money-t would be interesting to just how many were issued.

The Kaplan "Relief of Mafeking" roll says 126 such combinations to Cape Police; out of a total of 399 all units. Pte. F.H.A.Oakes is listed under Cape Police District 2.
