Thank you Elmarie. That's interesting. Is that a memorial specific to the 9th Laancers?

Yes, this one specific to the 9th Royal Lancers. There is also a memorial to the 12th Royal Lancers and one to the 17th Duke of Cornwall's Own Lancers inside this church.

Looks like the man in the newspaper report is William George McDonald. Remarkable that both should be from Aberfeldy and have a father called Duncan, who happened to be builder?

Not sure if this is the same man, a mix up of records or a complete coincidence?

Hello Mike

The entry in The Register of the Anglo-Boer War places the location of his death. The farm is marked on a map in the Official History of the War ("HMG"). Welcome, to the confusing world of place names for casualty locations.

There is brief mention of the action in this diary by a soldier of the 14th Hussars, that regiment had a number of casualties there, see the paragraph beginning "After a few days there, we went, .."

In memoriam by Steve Watt, which I assumed you must have read as mentioned before, because of the reference to it in your original post.
As regards the attachment, I would think, merely coincidental.

Yes indeed there is a very famous distillery, a stone's throw from my house.

Check this newspaper clip what do make of it? (MacDonal/McDonald often used and means little)
