Thank you very much indeed Meurig, I will study this.

Do you think the William McGregor who died in 1948 is a different man?

Different to 4241 W McDonald? Yes, I would say coincidence, perhaps some errors in reporting.

Such coincidences are not uncommon; for instance two men named W McDonald with the number 4241 died during the war - from different regiments though.

Trying to get my head round it but have had some help from colleagues on the Great War Forum. I have found another Aberfeldy William McDonald in A Military History of Perthshire

"Pte 6458 William McDonald, (Aberfeldy). Enlisted 1896, Served in South African War, . . . 1900-1902 (Queen's medal, with clasps "Cape Colony" and "Wittebergen"; King's medal, with clasps "South Africa, 1901," and "South Africa, 1902"). Still serving."

There's certainly some mistake been made somewhere, conflation of records. Have yet to nail this down. Likely that William the son of the Aberfeldy builder Duncan, did die on 24/4/1901, the man who died in 1948 was not him,so who was he? Was he 6548?

Hello Mike

6548 served in the Black Watch, his service papers are on FindmyPast. His birth place is "Abernethy", the next of kin recorded is "Alexander" - grandfather:
