Okay, well a brief look at his brother Fredrick shows the relief added on the Durban LI roll WO100/260 page 183, there you all, tends to prove it.

Concerning the 'Relief'/'Defence' puzzle on the roll that you showed .......

I see that the RAMC Major who signed it was "late of the ????? Convent Hospital, Estcourt". Would medical orderlies etc, who served in an Estcourt hospital, or indeed elsewhere in Estcourt, have been entitled to the 'Relief' clasp?

Regards
Brett

PS I was once a patient in this hospital, but after the Boer War, although I shared a ward with a Boer veteran of the war.

Sgt C B Lloyd, Natal Guides, whose QSA was shown earlier in post #11975 may be one of the men shown in the photo below. (From 'The Siege of Ladysmith in 120 Pictures' by Henry Kisch)

Good morning Brett,
I really don't think its a puzzle, WO100/224 is very clear and shows the relief clasp and not the defence for all of these men, as I said, I think they might all have been fitted with a defence clasp in error, Estcourt was not in Sir George's defences and yes, as I aluded to, the question of not only those particular clasps, but, indeed, the fact there are any clasps.
Interesting and rare medal though, one that I am sure you would like to have, I know I would.
Now then, tell me all about this Anglo Boer War veteran.
Kind regards Frank

Dear Frank

It seems that an error was made and the wrong clasps have been issued with these medals.

Its still a nice medal to a rare unit.

I am going to try dig a bit on this man and see if there is anything to confirm that they were in the siege. But seems more possible that they went in with the relief force.

Kind regards

Munroe
