Was he present in SA for the Manchester Guardian?

I too really enjoyed Steevens' account of Elandslaagte and found this particularly evocative of the battle. I added the whole chapter to my Elandslaagte book as it was far superior to anything that I could write.

Thanks for that, he must have been their correspondent in Natal, I think the American, Julian Ralph was their for them on the western front too.
Best regards Frank

Finished George Steevens book last night, it was a great shame that Mr.Steevens died before completion.
His style of writing was very descriptive and sometimes quite poetic bringing the atmosphere of the time alive within his narrative.
My favourite chapter was the very well written account of Elandsgaate.
The book also has a nice fold out map which luckily is still in great condition after all these years, a valuable addition to my library.

Hello Paul,
So you would recommend it then? I don't have a copy of this book, the problem is that I treat books in the same way as I treat medals, so I would want a first edition, but, unlike medals I do not worry too much about condition, I do, however, prefer to buy good clean copies, with nice tight spines and a good dust cover which can add fifty percent to the cost of the book! :(
Regards Frank
