Thanks David,

I didn't realise that 18 months service was a requirement for a KSA.
I also wondered why the QSA had a 1902 clasp.

Kind regards,

Iain

It appears he only joined the SAMIF in 1901 so he would not have gained the 18 months needed for the KSA.

The combination is quite common. I imagine he would have left the SAMIF after peace was declared in May 1902 and then rejoined for the Rebellion in 1906.

Kind regards
David

Hello Adrian,
I always just assume a biblical "three score and ten" when accessing a potential birth and lifespan for these men, but, in this particular case, there was an obvious man, perhaps too obvious, born in 1879, the son of an Islington butcher, I don't know, any next of kin shown in any surviving paper in WO126 would offer proof beyond reasonable doubt, certainly not a common name.
No matter, still a particularly pleasing pair though.
Regards Frank

I notice that the nominal roll pages supplied by David also have his Surname as "Purdy" so it must have been a typo on the medal roll hence the "Purday" on the QSA.

His wife Ida, was a lot younger than him and was born in Tarkastad in 1903, she was only 3 years old when he qualified for the 1906 medal !!

Ida Leonora who is mentioned on the DN was born 22 Dec 1903 in Tarkastad and she passed away on the 22 June 1980 Kwa-Zulu Natal. She was married to Charles Edward PURDY who died in 1955 in Natal per NAAIRS.

Regards
Adrian

A Corporal in the wretched Dirty Shirts is one thing, but, an ABO with a "clasp" please explain?

iaindh wrote: LOL Frank,

I'm still a badge man but I picked these up with some badges I bought in a lot.
Also a KSA to a Munster Fusiliers Corporal, an ABO but with a broken clasp, a Zim independence medal and a couple of others.

But many thanks, I was pleased to have picked them up.

Kind regards, Iain

Frank Kelley wrote: Good heavens Iain, medals, that's not like you, Father Christmas appears to be very generous these days, sadly, I think I must be in his Naughty Book!
There are no rank and file papers in Pietermaritzburg for the Natal Militia, however, I suspect a careful look through WO126/139-140 at Kew will bare fruit in respect of his SAMIF service, otherwise it will be biographical detail only I'm afraid.
Notwithstanding, certainly a superb pair, I would be very pleased with those if I were you.

I picked up 2 medals to Charles Edward Purday, a QSA with the SAMIF as a bugler and a Natal Rebellion with the Natal Royal Regt.
Strangely on the Natal medal, Purday is spelt as Purdy.
The QSA has only bars to South Africa 1901 & 1902

Any information on the above would be appreciated.

Iain,

There is a 982 T Purday in the BSAP, a musician also. I wonder if they were related?

Kind regards
David

That's very interesting David, I wonder.
The spelling being Purday is more unusual also.

As a separate issue, when I saw my "Purday" was Charles Edward, I felt sure he would be Scottish, but he was apparently born in England?

kind regards,

Iain

My apologies Frank,

being in SA, I didn't realise you wouldn't have known what an ABO was.
ABO is an abbreviation for Anglo Boere Oorlog; Afrikaans for Anglo Boer war. This was the medal issued in the 20's I believe to the Boer participants in the ABW.

sadly my one has a broken clasp

here is a link to a post one this site which explains alles
