Hi All,

I picked up 2 medals to Charles Edward Purday, a QSA with the SAMIF as a bugler and a Natal Rebellion with the Natal Royal Regt.
Strangely on the Natal medal, Purday is spelt as Purdy.
The QSA has only bars to South Africa 1901 & 1902



Any information on the above would be appreciated.

Well done Ian - the Bambatha - is it missing the 1906 clasp or was he one of the chaps who weren't awarded one?

This pairing is a favourite combination of mine.

Hello Ian.

I think you will find that "Purdy" is the correct Surname. He is confirmed on the Natal 1906 Roll as Purdy for the no clasp medal.

Also, there is an Estate File in PMB to one Charles Edward Purdy which might tell you more about this chap. He died in 1955.

Iain,

A nice pair of medals.

He is listed on WO100/276p39 for the clasps SA01 and SA02. These clasps are also confirmed on other pages eg WO100/276p36. He does not appear to have any service prior to the SAMIF.

I wondered about the clasp, there is no trace of there having been one.
I wasn't actually aware though that some were issued without one.

Just a bit strange that there is a QSA and a Natal Rebellion.
I wondered also if perhaps he wasn't wounded that there is a gap?
