Hi Frank,

It would appear so. Perhaps an error in the naming of the Surname on the medal or either when the roll was compiled ?? BUT it does look a lot like Deetlefs on the medal to me !!!

It was indeed a nice haul Frank; the Nesbitt's Horse was also in there, also a couple of QVC cap badges; also a couple of unusual items; a WWI British propaganda Iron Cross and a Army Temperence Assoc. 6 months Crookshank cross.

You are quite right. Perhaps this medal was left off the roll when it was put together ??

The Deetless surname does exist. The only Petrus Deetless I can find was one born in 1892 in Ventersburg in the Orange Free State.

A spectacular medal were it to be our "man" as he would have been 8 years old when he earned it. Not unheard of on the Boer side I might add.

did your search cover the Cape Province and Natal or just the OVS and ZAR? He may have been born in one of the colonies.
