Thank you Mike - always good to put faces to names ...

Just came across this, which makes the task of putting together a comprehensive list of potential recipients nigh impossible!

"It has been decided by the citizens' committee to extend the presentation of the locket to any man who has served or is serving in South Africa, whose parents reside in Ottawa. This embraces all regardless of regiment, whether it be colonial or British" (Ottawa Journal, 05/01/1901)

Mike,

Indeed.
Hibbard notes that Toronto approved the purchase of 225 medals. Why do these turn up so regularly and the Ottawa locket so rarely? The numbers presented are not so wildly different.
The same could be said of the London Ontario watch. I have the order of presentation for these and 78 names are listed. That, after the HMS Powerful watch (220 given), is the second largest group of ABW tribute watches. Yet I haven't come across a single example. Have you ever seen one?

Good Morning Neville.....

Yes Hibbard does say that a large number of the Toronto medals were issued but he does not say that there are 3 different metals and 3 different dates..... And not with the ribbon shown, they actually used the ribbon that was to be used on the proposed South African medal...….

There are silver ones issued to returning soldiers dated 1900 / 1901 / 1902 these were generally named but not all..... They were made from white metal and these were sold to the general public with a suspension bar and without and of course un-named..... Finally they were also made from brass.....

and

www.angloboerwar.com/forum/20-tribute-me...me-home-medals#41149

to see a piece of the original ribbon......

I have not seen the London Ontario watch but have the watch from St. Catharines Ont. Sadly no medal and I have the one from Charlton Place Ont., which I think is a suburb community of Ottawa now..... "Presented by the Citizens of Carleton Place to G.H. Doherty 1901"......

See:

I have seen a number of the Powerful watches for sale in fact there was one on echo bay about a year ago......

The better book on Canadian Tribute is George Browns but even that is missing a lot of them.....

One more recipient to add to the list:

Strathcona's Horse –
Lieutenant [Captain] Elmes John STEELE

Joined as 3 Squadron Sergeant-Major E.J. STEELE

Winnipeg Free Press, 4th June 1901

GOLD LOCKET FOR CAPT. STEELE.
Citizens of Ottawa Present a Winnipeg Soldier with a Handsome Present.

Capt. Elm STEELE, of Strathcona Horse, has returned from Ottawa where he has been winding up the affairs of the battalion. At Ottawa before leaving Capt. STEELE was presented with a very handsome gold locket by the citizens of the capital who wished to show their appreciation of the services rendered the country while in South Africa. Capt. STEELE is an old resident of Ottawa but has not lived there for over twenty years and on this account values the token of regard even more highly than he would had he been a resident of the city at the time he left for the front.
