Hello David,
A glance at WO364 confirms William Hall's entitlement to his pair and LSGC, I should imagine that he simply picked up an example of the Star whilst there or perhaps sometime later as a souvenir and a reminder of the town, he died in New Zealand in 1942.

The next Morton and Eden sale contains a Star without its top bar.

Their estimate fo £200-250 seems reasonable.

Spink sold two Stars yesterday. Both 'a's.

The first without the riband bar sold for a hammer price of £280. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £347. R6,900. Au$610. Can$580. US$450

The second with riband bar sold for a hammer price of £350. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £434. R8,600. Au$760. Can$730. US$560
