Thanks for your comments about Sgt. Dale's group. A reminder of a long-forgotten era. I regard Pearce's "History of LH" as pretty much a model of what an ABW unit campaign history should be. A good detailed background, reasonable bio detail, as many portraits as they could manage and a decent index. I wish there were a few others like it; let's say Lovat's Scouts, for example.
Best regards
IL.

It’s a most useful resource as is the entire online-library on this site. I urge all users to acquaint themselves with it.

Hi, I have just found your post; these are the medals of my great, great grandfather Ephraim. Is there any chance you still have his medals in your possession? My family remained in India until the midst of the Second World War. We have some bits (including his silver boar and a few medals from India) If you'd like to see more photos of him i have plenty. We'd love to have these back. Could you please get in touch and if there was any cost we would of course reimburse you. Thanks; Alex

If you have any photos of "Daddy" Dale of Lumsden's Horse taken during his time in SA, it would be great to see them. Or, indeed, any memorabilia relating to his service. The medal group is not currently for sale.

Hi IL, yes this indeed my GGF.

I have attached a couple of shots... "daddy" had a fascinating life and married the daughter of the maharaja no less! Although apparently she was a bit of a tricky mum (my GGM who returned to India after he died in Bournemouth)... He was nicknamed Daddy because he was so much older than the others; he was also in charge of rationing within the barracks.

Ephraim was born in Dorset and moved to Wales where he began working on the railroads; I assume this is what took him to India.

When Ephraim went to India he met "Jane" ( the Maharajas daughter) but by all account the maharaja was not happy and disinherited her.

We have his silver Boar and rifle medal. (I've attached a couple of shot which you are welcome to share)

I believe by all family accounts that he was a very kind and loving man; he was certainly loved by my grandmother (an anglo Indian who died recently) and he raised a very kind son (her father) in her diaries she calls him "her man" .. we have countless photos of there time in India.

I hope you will consider returning Ephraim's medals to us; it would mean a lot to both my father and I ; he has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer so we are trying to bring things together for him.

Thanks
