Brian,

From an unsold lot on City Coins to a real gem in a few hours B) . Fantastic news about the RNR Decoration. I know where there is one for you to complete the group if you wish to.

Cheers

Hi everybody

My bag at City Coins was 2 out of 5.

The one I really coveted (and did not get) was Lot 29 : the SA'53 to William Ovens of the 27th Rgt(Port Natal 1842).
The medal would have filled an important gap in one of my sub-collections, viz. "Medals to recipients present at SA actions where no medals per se were issued"
Incidents that I managed to cover over the years are
*The 1st and 2nd British Occupations of the Cape (1795 & 1806)
*The Battle of Boomplaats (1848)
*The First Boer War (1881)
*The Jameson Raid (1895)
*The 1914 Rebellion
*The 1922 Miner's Strike
and, with some imagination, I could include a DTD group to a General in the Ossewa Brandwag during WWII!

Regards

Would you like to expand on that, the pub for example, is it a good one?
The mutual friend, what does he sell in his shop?

At any of one of these three places:

1) The Local Pub

or

2) A mutual friends house

or

3) A mutual friends shop

All good fun

Henk

Ovens' medal was my first choice as well. He was involved in a very obscure action by British standards, but it was an epic event in Natal's history.

Ovens' medal was a 'once-in-a-lifetime' chance, so I will now have to content myself with the continuing search for SA 1853 Medal to the 45th Regiment, which was the first British regiment to garrison the newly-proclaimed Colony of Natal in 1843. Forty two British regiments garrisoned Fort Napier in Pietermaritzburg between 1843 and 1914, and the 45th had the distinction being the first and for the longest period (1843-1859).

The Durban suburb of Sherwood and a highway feature, 45th Cutting, commemorate the 45th Regiment, and they have so far escaped the attention of Jacob's Renaming Police, a fate that has already befallen NMR Avenue and Edwin Swales VC Drive.

Brett
