Enlisted April 1892 and served in South Africa from 15 October 1898 to August 1902.

QSA (2) Talana, Defence of Ladysmith; (4345 PTE. E.B. OAKES. 18/HRS:)

Oakes saw service in South Africa during the Boer War, and was present in action at the battle of Talana on 20th October 1899, before being present during the defence of Ladysmith from 3rd November 1899. The siege of Ladysmith lasted through to 28th February 1900, however Oakes was one of those who succumbed due to disease at Ladysmith on 15th February 1900. He is commemorated along with other members of the 18th Hussars on the south wall of the south transept of York Minster Cathedral in York.

Interestingly this medal was floundering unsold for many months on the Medal Centre's website priced at £450.

QSA (4) Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek, Belfast (3792 Pte. H. Middleton. Leicester Regt.)
[KSA (2)]

John Henry Middleton was born in 1870 at Leicester, the son of Charles and Clara Middleton of 113 High Cross Street, Leicester. A dyer by trade, he attested for the Leicestershire Regiment on 28 July 1893 and served in South Africa from 2 January 1896-12 September 1902. On 3 October 1900 he was tried and sentenced by Field General Court Martial for sleeping on his post; found guilty, Middleton spent 84 days in prison. He was later discharged on 27 July 1905;
