Frank

I might be completely wrong here but was led to believe that the 3 medals came from 3 different members of the family and they could not agree to sell as a lot together....seems things went pear shaped after that. Apologies if my comments are wrong or misleading.

Bennie's MC group was originally listed separately due to vendor requests, Michael then told me he was to list as one lot.

Recommended for a VC VF+

Rory remembered this from the wall of the Natal Carbineers Museum in PMB and it appears the group was stolen in the last couple of months. While it is great that this theft has been spotted, the problem is that the 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal, present in the group in the museum, are missing from the group as advertised here. Let's hope these can be re-united. Well done to Rory for his part in stopping the sales of the Farmer medals.

Siege of Mafeking soup ration card
It was late 1899 - war was imminent in South Africa. Colonel Baden Powell had been ordered by Britain to set up a military base in the border town of Mafeking. Psychologically affected by the fact that it was from here that the Jameson Raid was launched. The Boers determined to regain this key town. It started an epic 7 and a half months siege. After 6 months by March 1900. The town was famished. Death and destruction from the daily bombardments added to disease and starvation of the 9000 men, women, children, blacks and whites that were trapped. Horse meat soup kitchens started up to feed the population.

The theft of the Farmer medal group is another in an increasing number of disgraceful incidents involving the assault on South Africa's Colonial heritage. Interestingly, it has occurred in what South African's know as "Heritage Month". It includes a "Heritage Day", which is due in a week or two, when we are all urged to celebrate our shared heritage.

In Mark Coglan's Natal Carbineers history, 'Pro Patria' , which was published by the Regiment in 2000, his record of Farmer's heroism includes the following statements on page 17:
"An application for the VC was turned down."
Instead Farmer "was awarded the .... [DCM], the only one awarded to a Natalian during the Victorian period."

Coglan missed the significance of Farmer's DCM. It clearly was not the only DCM awarded to a Natalian during the Victorian period (i.e. the Boer War), but it was the only DCM (Dominiom & Colonial - Natal) (MYB 42) awarded during this war. It is, therefore, a unique item of Natal's history. (The only other Victorian D & C DCM awarded was in Canada.)

One might presume that since Kaplan knows who submitted the group for sale, it will not be difficult to identify the thief. I for one look forward to further developments in this matter.

Brett

I can't see a particular reference to Baldwins Auction, but there are some nice gallantry groups in this time around, and non gallantry!
