Yes, the last auction was a bumper for the Boer War. There are several Deville Wood gallantry awards in this auction which I have omitted so I think some people will be very pleased with the lots on offer.

He was the second son of Dr W. Northcott, Staines, and late of Rochester House, Little Ealing. Lieutenant Colnel Northcott was born in October 1856, and was educated privately. He was a good sportsman and fond of all Games being an excellent golf and football player. He entered the 19th Foot, February 1876, being promoted Lieutenant February 1877, and exchanged to the 2nd West India Regiment, November 1878. He became Captain in February 1886, was transferred to the Leinster Regiment the following September, promoted Major October 1894, and Brevet-Lieutenant Colonel 1899. For his services on the Gold Coast he was in 1899 mentioned in despatches, promoted Lieutenant Colonel, and made a CB. On the formation of the Field Force for South Africa, Lieutenant Colonel Northcott was appointed DAAG on the Staff of the 1st Division, and was present at the actions of Graspan and Belmont. He fell at Modder River while carrying orders for more troops to support the left attack. Lieutenant-General Lord Metuen, in his dispatch 1 December 1899, wrote : “The Army has lost one of the ablest officers in the service, and I cannot express the grief his death has caused me” Lieutenant Colonel Northcott is buried close to the bank of Modder River.” 7000

WO100/198 could not be any clearer, Hunter received the Defence of Ladysmith clasp as he was present with his battalion during the siege, from memory this particular medal was bought by a member of this forum.
Any recipient from this battalion or who appears on it's roll with a Relief clasp would have to have been detached/attached to another formation.
Notwithstanding, Hunter's medal is a very nice example, earned the hard way, most were presented Sir Arthur Dorward on the 17th of April 1903

Agreed - a very nice medal but sadly parted from its KSA which doesn't in any way diminish its attraction but to some is anathema.

Regards

Well, of course, I would have to say that, but, they are good medals, on the 21st of October 1899, these poor buggers had their own front of some six hundred yards, when battle was joined, moreover, young Freddy Deakin was out with his scouts, some four hundred yards in front of their line, certainly not a place I would have wanted to be, very much a rising star, recently promoted too, although, he had only joined the year before, brave boy, doubtless, both his Colonel and his parents would have been very proud! :woohoo:
