TOPIC:

Matjiesfontein, approx 1400 Km's from Durban on the way to Cape Town.

I thought that as this little place had a large British presence during the ABW it would be appropriate to show it off.

A wonderful preserved little town much the same as it was during the Boer War. A superb stop off either for the night or for a good meal. There is a well worth visiting museum full of period bits and pieces.

Even an original running bus from the UK.

I am relieved to see that Her Majesties flag still flys over The Lord Milner!
Very few things ever remain the same these days!
Haig was the one time commanding officer of "The Death or Glory Boys" in South Africa their number also included a certain Richard Sheridan, killed at Modderfontein, he was Winston Churchill's cousin!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, not one but two flags flying above the Lord Milner.

It is a superb fully operational hotel.The manager asked if I had been wandering through the veld as there are apparently hundreds of artifacts still lying around waiting to be found. This however, will have to wait until I pass that way again which hopefully will be sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the great pictures that brought back happy memories of young and carefree days! Hopefully the remote location of this place will keep it unspoiled for many years to come. Perhaps, more than Natal, it now deserves the title of "the last outpost of the British Empire" (excepting the Falklands and Gibraltar, of course).

I forgot to mention that it is very difficult to keep anything clean in the dusty Karoo, especially when there is a drought. Fortunately, there has never been a drought inside the Lord Milner.
