Today is 'Poppy Day' in South Africa, when the S A Legion sells buttonhole poppies to raise funds. I have kept my poppies from the past few years in case the custom ceases and I am left 'undressed' on this very important day. I had no need to be concerned this year, since there was a S A Legion collector in the Kloof Mall, although, sadly, she was doing little business and there were very few shoppers sporting poppies. Inexcusable really, since in this town the vast majority of inhabitants are the descendents of Colonists.

I was intrigued to hear that Saturday is poppy day in SA. Has it always been so?

It has always been 11th of the 11th in OZ and the poppy is popular. The lady friend and one of her neighbours was up selling poppies at the local shopping centre and they moved hundreds of the things. However, most buyers slipped them in their pockets!
