Hello David,
I like the new poppy, I had never associated it with this war until HM the Queen last visited South Africa.

Frank,

I thought it a fitting addition to the site's banner.

I was thinking this afternoon how many people survived the Boer War only to go on to lose their life 15 years later.

With kind regards
David

Hello David,
Yes, it was awful, the loss of a generation, bad enough from day one, but, when you get to the 1st July 1916 it is all about number cruching. :(
Kind regards Frank

I know where you are coming from with the poppy, but it doesn't fit in with the site for me. You could put numerous things in that came later but was not around then I suppose.

I approve of the poppy in this context. It has long been used in South Africa in wreaths or on its own at Boer War memorials and graves.

Sadly, although the red poppy may be increasingly used as a memorial to the dead from wars both before and after Flanders, it seems to be on its way to extinction in South Africa. It is apparently seen as another symbol of the oppression of Africa's inhabitants by slavery, colonialism and apartheid.

Regards
Brett

I also agree that the use of the poppy is entirely appropriate. I didn't know it was used as Brett says - nor that it has the modern connotation he describes. Nevertheless, I see that it is appropriate.
