Excellent Justin!
Did you drink it or just look at it? :S
So we can now add Beer, Sagan and Foreign Volunteers serving in the Royal Air Force to a list that now includes America, Uncle "Bob", Interior Decor, Zoology, Groote Schuur etc,
Having said that, I do see just where you are coming from, I trust there were no Schlosser's, Wagner's or Kuntz at the reception?

Frank you have just made my evening!

I had one of those Spitfires back in 2006, got exicited about the name but sadly it did not live up to the same reputation "the plane" had. I preferred one that was called "Bombardier" (I think?) ;)

One a brighter side and VERY APT for Remembrance Day, I was today emailed a picture of a WO11 SAAF Air Gunner whose medal group I have in my collection, who had been shot down and killed on a Warsaw run, whilst serving with 31 Squadron SAAF. The timing was amazing!

At almost the end of Remembrance Sunday, the site poppy has been retired and will come back in a year's time.

This thread though shows no signs of retirement and will, I imagine, run and run!

With thanks for a very interesting thread

As proof that not all Durbanites have forgotten the significance of 11/11/1918, attached is a photo of a page 2 report in this morning's 'The Mercury'.

Justin,
As both yourself, Brian and now Brett have given this thread a Royal Air Force feel, moreover, as today is the 11th of November, my own thoughts have been with those "guests" at all the Stalag Luft 111's in all its awful incarnations.
An old friend of mine stayed at them all and remembered them as being pretty unpleasant places, he is sadly no longer with us now.
About a decade after his death, I found myself checking his details and I noted his particular desire not to continue as a guest of Jerry having already spent much uncomfortable time at Sagan, he decided enough was enough, time to check out of the hotel, but, was recaptured by a Hun from Sagan, who, one assumes, had bad sausage breath and terrible manners!
Kind regards Frank Kelley

I dedicate this post to him, all the other "guests" and in particular "The Fifty"
Blue Skies Gentlemen! :)
