BirchCharles Francis GreyCaptainHe was killed in action at Spion Kop in the operations on Upper Tugela, January 24th, 1900, while endeavouring to rescue a wounded man.  He was the son of Colonel Birch, of Lympstone Grange, South Devon, late colonel commanding the 4th Battalion of the North Lancashire Regiment, was born in November 1866, and educated at Rugby.  He entered the South Lancashire Regiment from the 4th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, in December 1888, and was promoted Lieutenant May 1890, and Captain April 1898.
