ChapmanLionel James ArcherColonelHe died of enteric at Pretoria on December 3rd, 1900. He was a son of George Chapman of Dieppe. He was born July 18th, 1848, and educated at Cheltenham. He entered the Royal Artillery January 1869, was promoted Captain November 1879, Major April 1885, Lieutenant Colonel June 1895, and brevet Colonel June 1899. He went out to South Africa in January 1900, in command of the 13th Brigade Division of the Royal Field Artillery. He served with distinction, and when Commandant of Pienaars River Station he repulsed, on September 27th, 1900, an attack by the Boers. Colonel Chapman was mentioned in despatches, LG, February 8th, 1901, for his services. His name was inscribed on the Eleanor Cross War Memorial at Cheltenham College.
