Cox | Edward Henry | | Major | COX, EDWARD HENRY, Major, was born 21 May 1863, son of Arthur Zachariah Cox, of Harwood Hall, Essex. He entered the Army 12 November 1884; became Captain 15 March, 1892, and Major, 3 February 1900. Major Cox served in the South African War, 1899-1902, on the Staff, and was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including action at Colenso; took part in the operations on Tugela Heights 14 to 27 February 1900, and action at Pieter's Hill; in the Transvaal in May and June, 1900; in Natal, March to June, 1900; in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29 November 1900, including actions at Frederickstad (17 to 25 October); in Cape Colony, north of Orange River, including action at Ruidam; also during the operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony, November 1900, to May 1902 ^Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; Queen's Medal with five clasps, and King's Medal with two clasps). He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "Edward Henry Cox, Major, Royal Fusiliers. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 3 May 1907, and retired 23 August 1911

Cox | Ernest | | Lieutenant | He was killed in action at Magersfontein, December 11th, 1899. He was the son of Mrs Cox of Sloane Gardens, London and was born in March 1868, educated at Harrow, and joined his regiment November 1891, being promoted Lieutenant September 1894. He served in the Soudan campaign, 1898, under Lord (then Sir Herbert) Kitchener, as extra ADC to Major General Gatacre, commanding the British Division, and was present at the battle of Khartoum, being mentioned in despatches, LG, September 30th, 1898. He received the British medal and Khedive's medal with clasp, and the Order of the Fourth Class of the Medjidie. At Magersfontein, Lieutenant Cox, rushing forward and leading a few men, endeavoured to climb up the hillside at the south-eastern corner; they got up part of the way but in the end were all killed.
